This helps to explain why last year saw so many unexpected incidents such as Sars. A new cycle known as the “Eighth Fortune” will begin in 2004, and it will take a while before the situation stablises. We can expect Hong Kong to go through another turbulent 12 months in this , the year of the monkey. Our domestic economy will remain unstable and will be affected by external factors tha are difficult to deal with. In addition to that, neighbouring cities will present fierce competition. We need to think positive, be vigilant and not lose our grounding. However, there is a bright side to this year to stimulate our economy, the Government will introduce more schemes and projects. Although they might not help the overall picture, there will still be promising opportunities for some sectors, such as export trade. It is expected that our export figures will rise impressively. However, the garment industry may not benefit because restrictions such as export quotas will continue to hinder the industry. Hong Kong’s property market has always been the focus of speculation and 2004 it will experience and apparent rebound. There will be plenty of sales, creating a lively investment environment, but buyers should tread carefully. It may be a good time to purchase a home for yourself but be extremely cautious if buying for investment purposes.
